What Is a
Homeschool Co-op?
Understanding the co-op model and how it fits your family
A homeschool co-op is a collaborative learning environment where families come together to share educational responsibilities while maintaining the benefits of home-based education.
What a Co-op Is
A group of families who gather regularly to share educational responsibilities. Parents remain primary educators while classes are taught by approved teachers or parent volunteers.
- Parents welcome to stay on-site
- Shared teaching or hired teachers
- Community-focused environment
- Lower cost than private schools
- Flexible schedule (1-2 days/week)
What a Co-op Is Not
A co-op is not a full-time private school. It does not replace the parent's role in directing education. Most families use it as a supplement, not a complete alternative.
A co-op may not be the right fit if you need:
- Full-time instruction five days a week
- No parent involvement
- Accredited diploma programs
- Comprehensive special ed services
Co-op vs Microschool vs Hybrid
Microschools and hybrid programs often operate as small private schools. A co-op keeps parents connected and involved.
| Feature | Co-op | Microschool | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parent presence | Varies | Optional | Varies |
| Frequency | 1-2 days/week | 3-5 days/week | 2-3 days/week |
| Cost | Low | Moderate-High | Moderate |
| Primary educator | Parent | Hired teacher | Shared |
How Anchor's Co-op Works
Anchor is a teacher-led co-op, which means families do not need to take turns teaching classes. Instead, qualified teachers lead each class while parents contribute through volunteer roles like setup, hallway monitoring, or cleanup.
This model gives children the social interaction and expert instruction of a classroom setting while preserving the flexibility and family-centered rhythm of homeschooling.
What to Expect on Your First Tuesday
New families are invited to visit before committing. No pressure to enroll on the spot.
Is a Co-op Right for Your Family?
A co-op works well for families who want community and shared learning experiences while maintaining control over their child's education. It requires a time commitment from parents but offers flexibility and lower costs than other options.
Consider your family's schedule, your child's learning style, and your willingness to participate in a cooperative environment when deciding if a co-op is the right choice.
